Convention of Ramsar

The Convention of Ramsar is an international treaty for the conservation and the durable use of the wetlands, aiming at stopping the degradation and the loss of wetlands, today and tomorrow, by recognizing the fundamental ecological functions of those like their value economic, cultural, scientific and entertaining.

Convention

The official title is Relative convention at the wetlands of international importance particularly like habitats of the birds of water . Convention elaborate and was adopted by the participating nations at a meeting with Ramsar, Iran the February 2nd, 1971. It came into effect the December 21st 1975.

The list of the wetlands of international importance contains now more than 1200 sites, representing a surface of approximately 1  119  000 km ², whereas in 2000, it only 1021 ago of them. The country including/understanding the most sites is the the United Kingdom with 169, while the country having more large surface of listed wetlands is the Canada with more 130  000 km ², of which the Gulf Queen Maud with 62  800 km ².

150 countries currently signed this convention, against 119 in 2000. They were 18 in 1971. The countries signatories meet every three years at the time of a conference, the first having taken place with Cagliari (Italy) in 1980. Endorsements with initial convention were adopted with Paris in 1982, and with Regina in 1987.

the seat of this convention is established with Gland (Suisse), with that of the world Union for nature (IUCN).
