Convention of Oñate
The Convention of Oñate , signed with Oñate the August 29th 1839 between the liberal general Espartero and the generals Torre and Urbizdonto, repésentants of the general carlist Maroto, put an end in the north of the Spain to the First war carlist. For its completed work with an aim of finding an exit with the war, Espartero accepted the title of Prince de Vergara .
It was signed after complexes negotiations; Espartero represented the camp of Isabelle II, liberal, and Maroto represented the camp conservtor carlist, in favor of the applicant gift Carlos, brother of Ferdinand VII, the father of Isabelle. The intervention of the admiral Lord John Hay, chief of the British section of observation based with Bilbao, was decisive, since as of 1837 it started exchanges with the generals of the two camps in order to hasten the end of the conflict.
The signatories knew each other long time since they had fought together in the war of independence of the Spanish colonies in America (a group known under the name of ayacuchos , in spite of the fact that they had not taken part in the battles of the same name).
