Convention of Kanagawa
The March 31st 1854, the Commodore Matthew Perry asked for, in the name of the Americans, the authorization of enter the ports Japan board of Shimoda and Hakodate with the convention of Kanagawa . This treaty enabled them to stop and obtain coal and vivres in these ports. But it was a also question of the possible sending of a Consul in Japan. Indeed, the American translation of the treaty stipulated that an American consul would be sent if the latter considered it necessary. While the Japanese translation specified that the consul could come if the two countries considered it necessary…
Nevertheless this convention, although it was obtained by corruption, opened the way with the signature of the treaty of the August 14th 1858, which defined the terms of the opening of Japan in the trade. Moreover, it allowed the Britanniques, the Dutch, the French and the Russian to obtain similar conventions shortly after.
This first capitulation of the capacity Shogun Al of the Tokugawa vis-a-vis the foreigners marks the beginning of the decline of the latter compared to the emperor. Decline which led in 1867 to the restoration Meiji.
