Control panel road in France
One distinguishes five types of indication: indication by panels, indication by fires, indication by marking of the roadways, indication by beaconing, indication by demarcation.
This article is devoted to the indication by panels in France .
Typology of the panels
The French control panels are divided into various types:- Type has - Panneaux of danger (29 panels)
- Type AB - Panneaux of intersection and priority (9 panels)
- Type B - Panneaux of regulation subdividing itself in: Panels of prohibition - Panels of obligation - Panels of end of regulation. (84 panels)
- Standard C - useful Panels of indications for the control of the vehicles (50 panels)
- Standard THIS - Panels of indication of installations being able to be useful for the road users (39 panels)
- Standard D - Panels of direction (56 panels)
- Standard Dp - Panels of pedestrian marking out (4 panels)
- Standard FD - Panels of marking out of cycle installations (13 panels)
- Standard E - Panels of localization (24 panels)
- Type EB - Panneaux of beginning and end ofagglomeration (2 panels)
- Standard G - Panels of position of the level crossings (10 signals)
- Standard H - Panels of information (10 panels)
- Standard ID - Ideograms, emblems and logotypes (87 panels)
- Standard AK, K, KC and KD - Control panels temporary (35 panels)
- Standard M - additional Panels or signs (59 panels)
- Standard SE - Symbols (37 signals)
The other road signals, apart from the control panels, are the terminals, beacons and traffic lights:
- Standard F relating to the kilometric and hectometric marker-posts which appeared in the decree of the initial November 24th, 1967, but was removed since.
- Standard J - Beacons (13 signals)
- Standard R - Fires and light signals (16 signals)
Categories of panels
One distinguishes four categories of panels:- SP (permanent police force),
- SD (directional permanent),
- TP (temporary police force).
- TD (directional temporary)
Form panels
The shapes of the panels are the following ones:- panels of danger: triangular.
- panels relating to the intersections and notifying the modes of priority: triangular, square (panels placed on point) and octagonal.
- panels of regulation: circular.
- other panels: rectangular at horizontal and vertical sides.
However certain panels of direction comprise moreover a arrowhead directed towards the right-hand side or the left (Standard D).
The angles of the beacons and panels polygonal are replaced by round-offs in order to avoid the accidents because of clash by a pedestrian.
By exception, the round-off obligatory for the rectangular or octagonal panels placed on the verges prohibited to the pedestrians and the fast tracks is not prohibited to the pedestrians. This exemption does not apply to the triangles.
On the roads where indication is carried by gantries, consoles or tympanums of works of art one can make appear a representation of the signal in a rectangular register. The bottom of this register is of white color.
Dimensions
There exist seven ranges of size defined in the interdepartmental instruction on the road signs.
In general, one uses panels of the normal range.
The exceptional and higher ranges are reserved for the panels of the type C and THIS when they are exclusively employed for the advance sign of the additional surfaces on roads and highways. They make it possible to adjust the cumulated width of the panels C and THIS with that of the higher register, which relates to the location of the surface.
The panels of the very great range are employed on the highways, except technical impossibility of establishment.
The panels of the great range are normally employed on the roads with more than two ways and on certain two-track trunk roads indicated for this purpose by decision of the Minister for the Equipment.
The panels of the small range are used when there are difficulties for the establishment of panels of the normal range (line of trees close to the roadway, mountain road, verges reduced, in narrow tunnels, pavements, etc).
The miniature panels are used only exceptionally, and exclusively in agglomeration and tunnel, if it is a question of satisfying esthetic considerations, or in the cases of particularly difficult establishment when the dimension of the panels of the small range remains still too important.
