History
The road signs are as old as the roads. The first signs were those giving the directions. The Roman Empire set up terminals, in stone columns, along the roads to indicate the distances to Rome. With the the Middle Ages, the directional signals became current, indicating the direction of the cities to the crossroads.Indication became much more important with the development of the car. The basic principles of the majority of indications were defined the October 11th 1908 at the time of the first international Congrès of the road to Rome.
The notation symbolic on the panels of circulation (by pictograms, images of crossroads, etc) to replace texts, were set up for the first time in 1923 per J. - Omer Martineau, an assistant chief engineer of the ministry for the Roadway system of the Quebec. Indeed, at the time, the drivers all could not read. The same year, the Canadian Good Roads Condition Association adopts some of its pictographic elements for the Canadian highway network. The principle of indication symbolic system will obtain the international recognition within the framework of the World conference on road transport of 1949.
For this time, considerable changes have intervened. Today, the support is not any more of wood but metal. They also became often reflective thanks to a fine film containing of fine particles of glass.
North America and Australia
The panels of circulations to the the United States were standardized with the Manual one Uniform Traffic Devices (MUTCD).The control panels standardized in Quebec are found in the document Tome V - Road signs.
