Control panel road
The control panels road are, within the framework of the Road transport, of the elements of the Road signs.
The vertical Road signs including/understanding the control panels road, placed on the side of the roads and used internationally is supplemented by a horizontal Road signs (marking out of the ground), as well as the road traffic lights as well as the beacons.
CategorizationThe Convention of Vienna on the road signs, adopted the November 8th 1968, recognizes that the international uniformity of the signals and road symbols and the road marks is necessary to facilitate the international road traffic and to increase safety on the road. In its appendix 1 eight categories of signals are defined:
A. Signals of warning of danger
- B. Signals of priority
- C. Inhibiting signals or restriction
- D. Signals of obligation
- E. Signals of particular regulations
- F. Signals of information, installation or service
- G. Signs direction, marking out or indication
- H. additional Panels (placed under the signals)
According to the countries and the areas, the road signals are variously classified.
HistoryThe road signs are as old as the roads. The first signs were those giving the directions. The Roman Empire set up terminals, in stone columns, along the roads to indicate the distances to Rome. With the the Middle Ages, the directional signals became current, indicating the direction of the cities to the crossroads.
Indication became much more important with the development of the car. The basic principles of the majority of indications were defined the October 11th 1908 at the time of the first international Congrès of the road to Rome.
The notation symbolic on the panels of circulation (by pictograms, images of crossroads, etc) to replace texts, were set up for the first time in 1923 per J. - Omer Martineau, an assistant chief engineer of the ministry for the Roadway system of the Quebec. Indeed, at the time, the drivers all could not read. The same year, the Canadian Good Roads Condition Association adopts some of its pictographic elements for the Canadian highway network. The principle of indication symbolic system will obtain the international recognition within the framework of the World conference on road transport of 1949.
For this time, considerable changes have intervened. Today, the support is not any more of wood but metal. They also became often reflective thanks to a fine film containing of fine particles of glass.
North America and AustraliaThe panels of circulations to the the United States were standardized with the Manual one Uniform Traffic Devices (MUTCD).
The control panels standardized in Quebec are found in the document Tome V - Road signs.
