Control (title)

There are several legal professions which can carry the title of civility of Maître : the notary S, the lawyer S, bailiffs, the auctioneers legal, lawyers with the Councils of State and the Court of appeal, agents and Official liquidators, and solicitors.

The title of Master comes from the notaries who belonged to a corporation and who recognized themselves between them by this title of civility. The notaries were one of the first professions to use the title of civility of Master. Formerly the title of Mister was higher than that of Master; moreover the occupation of magistrate kept it (Mister the Judge, Mister the Prosecutor).

Today still, it is of use while being addressed to these lawyers to call them " Maître".

The rule is the following one:

Before the nomination of the lawyer, his title of civility is Madam, Miss, or Mister. During its exercise: Master. With the suspension of its activity, it takes again its title of before its nomination. It will not be able to be remade to call Maître that if it received the honorary membership by his pars.
