The Maîtrise is a rank and/or a university Diplôme corresponding to the rank or title of " maître". There exists in several countries and corresponds at various levels according to those.

The terms master and magister are translations of the main term in English and Latin. They however were introduced into the French language as new words in their authentic forms master (as in France where master was initially spelled " mastaire") or modified Magistère (introduced in 1985 like diploma in France). The term Mastère is also a deformed version of master introduced into the French language.

The term can be accompanied by the mention of a discipline: Maîtrise be arts, science Maîtrise, Maîtrise in right, arts Maîtrise.
