The Maîtrise is a rank and/or a university Diplôme corresponding to the rank or title of " maître". There exists in several countries and corresponds at various levels according to those.
The terms master and magister are translations of the main term in English and Latin. They however were introduced into the French language as new words in their authentic forms master (as in France where master was initially spelled " mastaire") or modified Magistère (introduced in 1985 like diploma in France). The term Mastère is also a deformed version of master introduced into the French language.
The term can be accompanied by the mention of a discipline: Maîtrise be arts, science Maîtrise, Maîtrise in right, arts Maîtrise.

In the countries of Anglo-Saxon university tradition, the control (in English master' S dismantles or mastership ) is a rank of the higher education which follows the baccalaureat. There are mainly two types of controls: the controls of the course type and the controls of the type seeks. The first category gathers programs strictly made up of course, whereas the second generally requires to follow some courses and to achieve a research project which must lead to the presentation of a memory.
Example of controls:
Maîtrise be arts
Certain controls belong to the 2nd university cycle (general case) and others with the 1st university cycle (case of controls in the universities English, as the control in physics, control in mathematics, obtained by carrying out one 4th year of studies in a course science Baccalauréat). Moreover the Maîtrise be arts also has a different direction in Scotland, where it is a rank finishing the second cycle, and in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, where it is a rank of tradition (Master off Arts (Oxbridge)).

In France, the control is a post-graduate advanced degree, delivered after four years of academic works. It follows the license and precedes the OF the or DEA. The control has to disappear, or at least to see its importance reduced because of the Réforme LMD (license - master - doctorate), or “3-5-8”: to facilitate the inter-European exchanges, the principal diplomas from now on are delivered after 3rd (license), 5th (DEA - OF the, master) and at least the 8th year (doctorate) of study.
It is obtained after four years of academic works, and given of a research task followed by one defense to the oral examination in the majority of the specialities. This research task, or memory, is of more than one variable importance according to the disciplines. As for the license, the titles of Master were historically used with the suffixes arts (for the social sciences and the literary disciplines), science and in right .
Before 1863, the control in philosophy ( filosofie magister ) was a rank comparable with a current doctorate of research.
