Contredihairesis

In the philosophy of Epictète, the Contredihairesis is the Judgment of second degree or Superjugement operated by the human Prohairesis and thanks to which us, in any situation, establish in our exclusive capacity what is not or judge it not to be in our capacity what indeed is well in our capacity.

In its Speech , Epictète gives us several examples of Contredihairesis in work, as in the three following cases:

  1. `Aujourd'hui I must surely die. Does there require that I groan?' (“Speech” I, 1,22)
  2. `Demain I must be imprisoned. Is it necessary that I cry about it?' (“Speech” I, 1,22)
  3. `I was condemned to the exile. What prevents me laughing, being happy, from being serene?' (“Speech” I, 1,22)

If the Prohairesis takes an attitude according to Contredihairesis, in case 1, the human being will choose to revolt in front of death and will groan. In case 2, it will test any means to avoid the prison and will cry. In case 3, it will try to avoid exiles it and will not laugh, will be neither happy nor serene.

Contredihairesis is Superjugement opposed exactly to the Dihairesis.
