The family of the Agavacées is a family of plants Monocotylédones.

They are plant stemless or trees with rivet washers which one finds in the areas Tropicale S or Aride S and particuièrement in America. In this family one finds the Agave, the Yucca and the Tubéreuse. Yucca gloriosa is a yucca naturalized in France which develops on the sandy coastal areas of south-west.

The sisal plants have a slow growth and it should be waited several years before they flower. They flower only once before dying. The large floral pole carries many tubular flowers in general. The multiplication is ensured by seeds and rejections or bulblets the base of the rivet washer which has just flowered. They form a rivet washer of sheets thick, succulent, finishing points some and presenting a thorny margin

Use

Among the sisal plants, Agave sisalana originating in the Mexico is cultivated in the tropical zone for the production of fiber called Sisal which was very much used for the manufacture of string in agriculture.

With the Mexico, the juice of certain sisal plants, fermented then distilled, is used to produce the Mescal.

Classification

According to Watson and Dallwitz it includes/understands approximately 400 Espèce S divided into 9 kind S:

The phylogenetic classification APG (1998) place this family in the order of the Asparagales directly attached to the group of the monocotylédones. In phylogenetic classification APG II (2003) this family is optional and cettes plants can be also assigned to the family Asparagaceae . In Agavacées the revision 2003 of phylogenetic classification adds the species resulting from the following families:

  • Anémarrhénacée S
  • Anthéricacée S
  • Béhniacée S
  • Herrériacée S
  • Hespérocallidacée S
  • Hyacinthacées (kind Camassia )
  • Hostacées (kind Hosta ).

The sep 2006 accepts 23 kinds:
