Contis-beach
Contis-Beach is a seaside resort of the commune of Saint-Julien-in-Born (Moors) located on the Atlantic littoral. To the south of the station, the current of Contis is thrown in the Atlantic Ocean. It marks the border between the Pays of Born and the Marensin.
History
Contis, like the majority of the communes of the Gascon littoral, would bear a Scandinavian name of origin to bring closer to Conteville in Normandy. Contis, would derive from " Knut-hus" , the house of Knut. The Vikings would have settled in Boucau de Contis in years 840. One can think that the vault which was on the dune formerly was built at the place where the Vikings had installed a " amer" , a coastal reference mark allowing them to find the mouth. The same device of beacons existed in Mimizan and Capbreton. It had resembled that which one sees in the port of Ciboure where alignment on the two lathes makes it possible to aim at the mouth. Knut is not quoted in franques annals. Contis is in the Country of Born which would hold its name of Björn, the chief of the invasion according to Joel Supéry " The Secrecy of Vikings"
