Continental Europe
The continental Europe is often put in opposition with the Italian islands (Sardinia, Sicily) and especially British (Great Britain, Ireland). This dichotomy continental-islander is explained in the politico-economic conflicts which could sully the diplomatic harmony in Europe, and in particular still today in the European Union.
The use of the term “ the countries of continental Europe ” often refers to the group formed by the Benelux, the France and the Germany.
