History

Birth

Formed the April 23rd 1946, 6 weeks before NBA, the CBA is older professional league of basketball of the world . Initially called the Eastern League (ou' Eastern Professional Basketball League' ), then the Eastern Basketball Association , the league is famous Continental Basketball Association the August 26th 1978, with the will of the management committee to extend the League of one coast to the other of the United States. The league wanted to amalgamate with the WBA (Western Basketball Association), but all teams WBA ceased their activities before even as fusion is not finished.

Minor league, experimental league

As of the Années 1950 the CBA is registered like a minor league, where the players take refuge not having been able to find a place in NBA or ABA. Parallel to that, it is registered as the league of the innovations.

In 1946/47, the Hazleton Mountaineers integrate three players of origins Afro-American, a very rare fact in the major sports in the United States at that time.

The CBA sets up a partnership with the NBA. It signs as of 1983 a contract of 1 million dollars over 3 years with the NBA for the development of the players and the referees. Later, during season 1987/1988, the CBA on an experimental basis moves the line of the 3pts of 23 ' 9 feet with 22 feet on request of the NBA.

The principle of ten-days contact also comes from the CBA. Following an agreement with NBA (years 1980), the players of CBA could sign a contract of 10 days test in a frankness from the great league , contract renewable once. At the end of this test, either the player obtained are contract for the remainder of the season in NBA, or it turned over in its frankness from origin. This concept since perduré, and even spread.

The years Isiah Thomas (1999-2001)

In 1999, old the star NBA Isiah Thomas repurchases, with a group of investor, the CBA. This repurchase also included entirety of the franknesses which compose it.

In March 2000, in spite of an enticing offer, Thomas refuses to resell NBA which wanted definitively to make a league of development of it. The June 28th, Isiah Thomas is engaged as trainer of the Indiana Pacers. As it is interdict for a trainer NBA to have its own league, it is then to oblige to sell the CBA. It signs a " then; intention of vente" with the union of players NBA. NBA announces during this time that she prefers to put a term at the co-operation with the CBA, which had been used to him as league of development for 33 years. This co-operation will have to end with the autumn 2001, with the creation of NBA Development League.

Incompetent to sell his league, and wishing to join Pacers, Thomas places the CBA in liquidation the October 3rd 2000. This not paiment has as consequences wages of the players, and the incapacity to raise funds to organize the matches. The debts accumulate for the CBA, and the February 24th 2001 the league is declared in Banqueroute. 5 of the former owners then take again in hand their franknesses and decide to migrate towards a concurrent league, the International Basketball League. The other owners let them perish their franknesses at the same time as the league collapsed under the debts.

Disappearance, rebirth

The CBA died in this spring 2001, but IBL is not as well as possible either. It disappears in its turn during the summer. Nevertheless new grouping IBL-CBA decides to amalgamate with the small league called International Basketball Association, in order to set out again in 2001-02. The new CBA is thus creates…

The cal-ups

It is besides as a minor league of the NBA that the CBA seems to be found a raison d'être with the famous cal-ups . Each team NBA can invite during the season one or more players in order to supplement her manpower. 553 cal-ups are indexed between 1978 and 2003.
