Contest of the cities and flowered villages
Created in 1959, the contest of the cities and villages flowered is organized in France to promote the development of the green areas in the cities. National and free, it is opened with all the common S. Of 600 the first year, the participants passed to 5300 in 1972, more 10 000 in 1993 then 12 000 in 2003. In 2003, 2375 were labellisées and have the right to the Ville panel or flowered village, of which 187 obtained 4 flowers, among which 67 received the " Large Prix".
In 2005, 480 new attributions were made. In 2005, 2.806 communes are holders of the panel " Fleurie" city; or " Village fleuri" :

196 communes are classified 4 flowers including 70 Grands Prix.
- 644 communes are classified 3 flowers.
- 885 communes 2 flowers.
- 1.081 communes 1 flower.
The rewards go from 1 to 4 flowers, plus the Grand Prix. The signs from 1 to 3 flowers are indicated by the regional committee and select the cities likely to obtain a higher reward; the 4th flower and the Grand Prix are allotted by the national council.
Criteria
- for 50%: the vegetable framework of the commune (trees, shrubs, flowers)
- for 30%: efforts of the commune for the improvement of the framework of life (cleanliness of the city, actions of embellishment, controls publicity, participation of the population in fleurissement, respect of the environment…)
- for 20%: animation and tourist valorization
Organization
The organization of the contest, managed by the National council of the cities and flowered villages which is a Association law 1901 chaired by the Minister for Tourism, also includes “communal contests of the houses and flowered gardens”, “departmental contests of the flowered houses”
European contest
There exists also a European contest, baptized floral Entente , in which currently eleven countries take part: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and Slovenia.With the contest European 2003, France gained two gold medals for Hyères (Var) in the cities category and Bormes-the-Mimosas (Var) in the villages category.
With that close, the commune of Felsberg (the Saar) at the Franco-German border was first common allemande to receive the panel " fleurie" city; in 2004.
National competition 2004
France gained two gold medals for Cahors (Lot) of cities category and Cayriech (Tarn-et-Garonne) of villages category.
National competition 2005
Handing-over of the prices the February 15th 2006 with Paris .
