Contents of Līlāvatī

The Līlāvatī belongs to the kind of treaties that them Indians call pāṭīgaṇita , or vyaktāgaṇita , it acts of elementary calculation having an application in the everyday life. It comprises two hundreds seventy-seven stanzas which one often divides into twenty and one chapitres :

  • paribhāṣā (conventions). Various measurements of currencies, lengths, surfaces, volumes and weight.

  • saṃkhyāsthānanirṇaya . Numeration.
  • parikarmāṣṭaka . Operations on the nombres : addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square, square, cubic root and cubic root.
  • bhinnaparikarmāṣṭaka . Operations on the fractions.
  • śūnyaparikarmāṇi . Operations with zero.
  • vyastavidhi . Regulate inversion : how to find the initial number when one knows the result and the continuation of the operations which led to this result.
  • iṣṭakarmāṇi . Rules of supposition : another processes to find the solution of an equation but, this time, one carries out calculations by choosing (iṣṭa) an arbitrary number to make calculations and one concludes using a rule of three.
  • saṃkramaṇa and viṣamakarma . To find two numbers of which one knows the sum and the difference and to find two numbers which one knows the sum or the difference and the difference in their squares.
  • vargakarma and mūlaguṇaka . Various rules bringing into play squares (varga) or roots (mūla) of numbers, like finding two quantities whose sum or difference of the squares, decreased by one, will give a square.
  • trairāśika . Rule of three.
  • bhāṇḍapratibhāṇḍaka (goods for goods). Combinations of several rules of three: if three hundred mangos are worth one drachma and thirty grenades, a paṇa , say to me quickly, my friend, how much one obtains some for ten mangos .
  • will miśravyavahāra (transaction of the mixtures). Rules allowing to calculate interests, prices of noble metal alloys… from where the name.
  • śreḍhivyavahāra . Problems relative to arithmetic progressions or geometrical.
  • kśetravyavahāra . Problems of calculations on the geometry of the plane figures.
  • will khātavyavahāra (excavations). It acts, for example, to calculate volumes of tanks dug in the shape of truncated pyramid.
  • citivyavahāra . Calculations of volumes of piles (ISIC) , built on plane bases of various forms.
  • krakacavyavahāra . krakaca : saw. Calculations of volumes obtained by sawing of tree trunks.
  • rāśivyavahāra . Volumes of heap of grains.
  • chāyāvyavahāra . Calculations relating to the shade (chāyā) of a Gnomon.
  • kuṭṭaka (the pulverizer). Seek solutions of the equations diophantiennes of the first degree.
  • aṅkapāśa . Calculations of arrangements, combinations and permutations.
