Contemporary

Contemporary is a founded Californian recording company at the end them years 1940 by Lester Koenig.

In beginning of the year 50, Contemporary publishes the meetings directed by Howard Rumsey with the " Lighthouse" of Hermosa Beach. The label will publish the recordings of the main actors of the Jazz West Coast. Initially, those of Shelly Basket which binds to the company by a long-term contract. Koenig joins to the photographer William Claxton for the illustration of its discs. He does not hesitate to publish the most original experiments of the movement West Coast. At the end of the Years 1950, the label will publish the first discs of Ornette Coleman.

The Années 1960 are more difficult for the activities of the company. Koenig will produce nothing any more but one or two discs per annum of 1963 with 1975. An renewed interest occurs then for the Jazz and the company records many musicians of which old Art Pepper and Hampton Hawes. In 1977, the founder Lester Koenig dies. A few years later, the company passes under the control of Fantasy .

The catalog of Contemporary consists of some 150 albums which represent a big part of the history of the Jazz.
