Constitution of year X
The organic senatus consult of Thermidor 16 year X , known as constitution of year X , founds the consulate with life.
It is adopted at the request of Napoleon Bonaparte which is approved by Plébiscite. It is from now on in the middle of each institution.
- the preserving Senate, firmly controlled by Bonaparte, sees its capacities increased with the detriment of the legislative Body and the Tribunat. Bonaparte names the members of the Senate and can dissolve the legislative Body and Tribunat.
- It has the Right of reprieve
- It can sign only the treaties
- the Vote for all is partially abandoned with the profit of the Suffrage censitaire.
-
Contrary to the commonly diffused idea, Bonaparte does not become First consul with life with this constitution, but at the time of the preceding constitution, by a constitutional reform of Thermidor 14 of year X, that is to say 2 days before this constitution.
