The city, located at the edge of the Pacific Ocean and at the mouth of the river Maule, is a Seaside resort, an industrial town (wood paper and pulp) and a minor port. The surface of the commune is of 1.344 km ² and its population in 2002 was of 46.081 inhabitants.
