Constant Permeke
Constant Permeke , born with Antwerp the July 31st 1886 and deceased with Ostend the January 4th 1952, is a Belgian Artist-painter , considered as major representative of the Flemish Expressionnisme .
Its works evoke the the North Sea, the landscapes of Flanders, the fishermen and the peasants.
It belonged to the second group of Laethem-Saint-Martin starting from 1909.
Starting from around fifty (1936), he was also sculptor in a very personal vigorous style.
Its house and its workshop with Jabbeke are transformed into provincial museum Constant Permeke in 1959.
In 1997, Belgium recognizes the importance of the work of Permeke by using its effigy on the Belgian tickets of 1000 francs. An important retrospective with take place with the town hall of Paris in 1998. Its works are visible in many museums, of which those of Antwerp, Brussels, Ixelles, Ostend, Grenoble, Paris or Prague.
