Constancy III

Constancy III ( Flavius Constantius ), (? - 421), proclaimed Roman Emperor of Occident into 421.

General of the Emperor of Occident Honorius with the title of Patrice, Flavius Constantius overcame the usurpers appeared in the wake of the Germanic invasions of 406: Constantin III as a Gaulle in 411, Maxime in Spain in 411 then in 413 Jovin again as a Gaulle.

He very skilfully manages to bring back the Visigoths to peace: in 414, in that causes hunger one by a blockade, it forced them to leave Spain to return to Aquitaine. In 416, it treated with their king Wallia, in exchange of deliveries of supply. Wallia restored the usurper Priscus Attale and Galla Placidia, girl of Théodose Ier and sister of Honorius that Alaric Ier had taken as an hostage and that his/her brother-in-law Athaulf, died into 415, had married. Finally in 418, Constantius granted to the Visigoths the statute federate people ( Foedus ) in Aquitaine second. The Visigoths remained in peace until 456.

Constantius married in 417 Galla Placidia. They had two children, Valentinien III and Honoria.

Thanks to its successes, Constantius was named Auguste in February 421, under the name of Constance III, but Théodose II did not recognize it. The religious fastening of It in Constantinople opened a conflict between the two parts of empire; Constancy III died of disease in September 421 whereas it prepared a forwarding against Théodose II.
