Conspiracy of Cellamare

The conspiracy of Cellamare is a plot warped by the Spain in 1718 to withdraw the Régence kingdom of France with Philippe of Orleans. It draws its name from Antonio del Giudice (1657 - 1733), prince de Cellamare, ambassador in France of the king d' Espagne Philippe V.

At the instigation of the abbot Dubois, Secretary of foreign affairs, France formed the Quadruple Alliance with the England, the Holland and the Emperor, for contrebattre the claims of Philippe V, grandson of Louis XIV, which révait to carry the crown of France, notwithstanding the renunciation obtained in the treated of Utrecht, in the event of death of Louis XV.

The duchess of Maine, wife of bastard legitimated Louis XIV, intrigued against the Regent who, while making break the will of the old king, had drawn aside her husband of any political role. It entered in correspondence with the Prime Minister of Philippe V, the Italian cardinal Giulio Alberoni.

With the support of the ambassador of king d' Espagne, a project of plot was woven soon in the entourage of the duchess. One found there one of his chambermaids, the baroness of Staal-Launay, which left interesting reports, the cardinal of Polignac, the duke of Richelieu, and several less considerable characters. One erected scaffolding any kind of chimerical plans: to remove the Regent, to make allot Regency to Philippe V, who would convene the general states… the execution was as failing as the design: entreated made transcribe compromising documents that they wanted to send to Alberoni by an obscure copyist who, terrified, hastened to go all to tell with the police force.

The Dubois abbot let leave the dispatches, entrusted to a young Spanish abbot, but made it stop with Poitiers the December 5th 1718. The December 9th, the Regent made stop prince de Cellamare who was expelled at once, like all those which, of near or by far, had taken part in the conspiracy: the duke of Maine, sent to the fortress of Doullens, the duchess, exiled with Dijon, the duke of Richelieu put at the Bastille, etc All obtained their forgiveness afterwards a few months and nobody was sent to the scaffold.

The January 9th 1719, France seizes the occasion to declare the war in Spain, which England had already done on December 27th.
