Conrad de Marbourg

Conrad de Marbourg , born during second half of the 12th century between the 1180 and 1200, dead on July 30th 1233, is a German inquisitor .

Biography

secular Priest about the Prémontrés, it is announced initially by preaching the Fifth crusade, proclaimed in 1215 by Innocent III. In 1227, whereas it is écolâtre with Mainz, it is named pontifical police chief in the Rhineland. Supported by Dominican Conrad Dorso and Jean the One-eyed one, it helps the bishops to repress the Hérésie by taking again the role of the “synodal witnesses”, these clerks charged to denounce the heresy to make it possible the procedure to open. In 1231, Gregoire IX applies its constitution Excommunicamus instituting the medieval Inquisition: October 11th, it confers on Conrad, first of long series, the title of inquisitor. This one is left free choose his/her collaborators: he addresses himself to the Dominicain S via the priors of Regensburg, Friesach and Strasbourg.

Conrad de Marbourg fights against the “Vaudois” and “Cathares”, as they then are called, without real distinction between the heresies, like against the sect of the Lucifériens. It is turned against the nobility, in particular the count Henri II of Sayn, which it shows of heresy luciférienne. Its fanaticism, as well as the many made abuses are turned over against him: Sayn calls upon achevêque of Mainz which convenes a synod to check the loads weighing against the aristocrat. Repudiated, Conrad does not give up however its mission which he judged just. He dies in a ambush a little later whereas he returns to Marbourg.

Conrad von Marburg is represented in the tragedy of the Saints of the English novelist Charles Kingsley. It is also represented in the cartoon the Third Will of Xavier Dorison and Alex Alice, of which he is the main character.
