Conrad Ier de Mazovie (in Polish Konrad I Mazowiecki ), from the dynasty of the Piasts, was born in 1187/1188 and deceased the August 31st 1247. Younger brother of Lech the White, he is the son of Casimir II the Juste and of Helene of Kiev.
Become duke of Mazovie and Cujavie in 1202, it was also duke of Cracow (1229 - 1232, 1241 - 1243).
Conrad Ier de Mazovie remained in the history like the person being responsible for the creation of true a State teutonic (future Prussia), which will be a permanent threat for the Poland and causes it many wars with the Germany.
Duke of Mazovie and Cujavie
In 1202, died of Mieszko III the Old man, Lech the White succeeds to him on the throne of Cracow whereas Conrad, which will be the best ally of its elder, becomes duke of Mazovie (until in 1247) and of Cujavie (until in 1231). When Romance Large the, the prince of the Rus' de Halych-Volodymyr, lance an offensive against Poland in 1205, it is stopped by the armies of the two brothers.
Privileges granted to the Church
The June 9th 1210, at the time of a synod held with Borzykowa, the archbishop of Gniezno Henri Kietlicz manages to make confirm by Conrad and the other Polish dukes the many privileges obtained by the Église with Łęczyca in 1180. It obtains the privilege of immunity for the Church (it will be able to have its own courts).
Invitation in Teutoniques
In 1216, it founds the Ordre of Dobrin, which will be recognized by the Pape Gregoire IX in 1228, from which the mission is to protect the Mazovie from the incursions of the Prussian tribes . To thank them, Conrad will yield to them part of the area of Dobrzyń. In 1222, it will offer properties to the bishop Christian missionary who organizes the Baltic Croisades against the Old man-Prussians.
In 1226, with an aim of preserving its grounds of an invasion of the Prussians, the duke Conrad Ier de Mazovie invites the Ordre of the Knights Teutoniques to come to be installed on the border of Poland. Those are installed around Chełmno, on low the the Vistula. The same year, the emperor grants to the Teutoniques sovereign and seigneuriaux rights on their future conquests. As of 1231, Conrad encourages the Teutoniques Knights to penetrate on the Prussian territories. It is the beginning of the extermination of the Prussians and the creation of a State teutonic. In 1234, the Large-Master of the Teutoniques Knights presents a document falsified to the pope Gregoire IX giving a report on the donation of a territory by Conrad de Mazovie. This one realizes very quickly that after having invited Teutoniques on its territory, it lost control of it.
Duke of Cracow
Starting from 1227, following the assassination of his/her brother, it starts to fight to go up on the throne of Cracow. In 1229, after having made the seat of Kalisz without success, it invades the areas of Sieradz, Łęczyca and Sandomierz, before seizing Cracow which it will be obliged to give up in 1232.
It again seizes the throne in 1241, after the death of Henri II the Piles with Legnica. It will be driven out definitively two years later by its nephew Boleslas V Modest the, helped by the nobility of Petite Poland.
