Critical

Love and espionage: from a conventional kind a priori , Hitchcock draws a work ultra-personal, rigorous, with the sober style and pure, constantly enthralling as well by the deepening of the characters as by the density and the suspense of the action itself. As in Rebecca, the heroin is still in love which feels unworthy of that she likes. Frustrated romantic heroes, Alicia and Devlin will not cease, throughout the intrigue, to put itself to the test, proving in that their lack of confidence in themselves, in their partner and their love. This play extrèmement cruel for them forms part of (double) the play which heroin in the middle of the spies carries out. Being, in the couple which it forms with Devlin, the most exposed and more moving, its moral route which leads it to want to repurchase the fault of his/her father and to obtain the regard of Devlin coincides exactly with its route in love. In both cases, it takes infinite risks and it is only at the edge of death, having made only the four-fifths of the way, which it will meet finally confidence and the love without ulterior motive of Devlin. This double route proceeds in the middle of an astonishing gallery of figures pathibulaires and worrying with which contrast the touching figure of this " malicious amoureux" what incarnates Claude Rains, alive like so much of hero hitchcockiens under the cut of his/her mother. the subtle depth of the many scenes with two shows the variety of the style hitchcockien: sometimes the author uses rather simple fixed plans when he wants to emphasize the importance of the dialog, sometimes he resorts to a very sophisticated technique of long plans and sequence shots developing closest to the actors. This last technique will still lead it to more radical employment " ten take" minutes; in the Cord and the lovers of the Capricorn. In the rare scenes with multiple characters, Hitchcock gives free course to its virtuosity, at the same time in the field of construction and the suspense and on that of the development of movements of spectacular apparatuses, like the famous plan with the crane leading to the hand of Bergman closed again on the invaluable key of the cellar. The genius of Hitchcock consists in Notorious enchasing, according to a formula which it is alone to have also pushed far, an intimate and secret history in an adventure external, palpitating and spectacular, which, far from depriving it of its direction, makes it more intense on the contrary, more comprehensible and thus to some extent more universal.

One of best films of Hitchcock. The final dolly in the staircase remained engraved in the spirits, as well as the couple Cary Grant/Ingrid Bergman.
