Connacht or Connaught (in Gaelic Connachta ) (in Latin Conacia ) is a province of the Irish Republic located at the west on the Atlantic coast. The province includes/understands the Counties of Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. Its surface is of 17713,18 km ².
Its principal urban centres are Galway in the south and Sligo in north. Its population is of 464000 inhabitants what in fact for this reason smallest of the four Irish provinces.
The province has areas where Gaelic still remains in a very long-lived way like the west of Mayo or Connemara.
The culminating point of the province is Mweelrea (814 m of altitude) in the County of Mayo. One finds there also the largest island of Ireland with Achill and more the big lake with the Lough Corrib.
Connacht-Ulster is one of the four electoral areas for the elections in the European Parliament until 2004 when it took the name of Western Northern Ireland .
