Conjoux

Conjoux is a village of the common Belgian of Ciney located in Walloon region in the Province of Namur. In the past the largest village of the ex-commune of Conneux, attached to Ciney in 1977. (See Fusion of the communes).

Religion

At the century spent, the abbot Elisee Laloux, priest of the parish, equipped with sharp a devotion towards Our-Lady-of-Doors, made reproduce the famous caves where Sainte Bernadette Soubirous affirmed to have seen appearing the Virgin Mary. Its motivation was to offer a place of pilgrimage to all those which did not have the means of even going to Lourdes. Until the appearances mariales of Beauraing in the Thirties, Conjoux was the place of pilgrimage more attended diocese of Namur.

The castle and its occupants

The haughty seigniory of Conjoux goes back to mists of time. About 1473, the lord of Custinne (ancestor of the famous marquis of the same name, general guillotine during the French revolution) sold it to a certain Gilles Coppin, provost of Walk-in-Famenne. Coppin remained the seigneuriale family until the end of the Old Mode (For Belgium in 1795) except during briefs interludes. The family of Coppin de Conjoux (Viscounts since the Dutch mode) died out in the counts de Villers de Waroux d' Awans de Bouilhet and of Bovegnistier, who built there a castle in the tastes of time, family whose last member died at the extreme end of the XXe century. They are its descendants, the barons van der Straten Waillet who occupy and exploit currently the castle of Conjoux.

Literature

One of the most eminent tenors of the regional literature condruzienne, Gaston Comp2ere, was born in 1924 in Conjoux. He is the son of the teacher of the small elementary school which was held in the same building as the communal room, like often in the old small rural communes.

Remarkable tree

The village shelters the second larger lime of Belgium (Tilia platyphyllos). This remarkable tree by its age which one estimates at approximately 400 years, already did not measure less 8m52 of circumference with 1m50 of the ground in 1987.
