Congress for the democracy and progress
The Congress for the Democracy and Progress is the political principal party Burkinabe. It is chaired since 2002 by Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.
The party was founded under the name of Organization for the Democracy and Progress in October 1987 by the president Blaise Compaoré after his accession with the capacity following a coup d'etat. With the advent of the multi-party system to beginning of the year 90, the party becomes ODP/MT (for Mouvement of Work. The February 5th 1996, the party takes its current name.
Initially, the party took as a starting point the thought of Thomas Sankara and claimed Marxisme. But very quickly Compaoré makes of it a party without true political line with the service of its capacity. The party gives up officially the Marxism the 1997 and is presented in the form of a social democrat.
All the Prime Ministers for Burkina Faso as well as the large majority of the members of the apparatus of State belong to the presidential party. Except Desired Kadré Ouédraogo which initially was a technocrat without affiliation.
At the time of the legislative elections of the May 5th 2002, CDP received 49,5% of the voices and 57 of the 111 seats of the National Assembly Burkinabe. The last elections of May 6th, 2007 marked a return in strength of the CDP with 73 deputies out of the 111 of the National Assembly.
