Congregation of the Passion of Jesus-Christ

The Congrégation of the Passion of Jesus-Christ is a founded catholic religious order in 1720 in Italy by the holy missionary Paul of the Cross (Paul Danei, born in 1694 with Ovada, Italy, deceased in 1775) under the name of Congrégation of the exposed Clerks of the very Holy Cross and the Passion of our Lord Jesus-Christ . The members of the congregation are called Passioniste S.

In 1720, Saint Paul of the Cross withdraws itself in a hermitage in Toscane and founds the congregation after having had the vision of the covered Christ of a decorated black tunic of a heart and carrying the inscription “  Passion of Christ  ” or “  Passion of Jesus-Christ  ”. This in order to propagate the devotion with the Passion of Christ by itinerant preaching and the spiritual retirements.

The first Retraite passionist (convent) is set up in 1737 on the mount Argentario (Grosseto).

The established rule by Paul, approved in 1741, based on the total renouncement, is demanding: to the three usual wishes (poverty, chastity, obedience), he adds a fourth, that to propagate the worship of the Passion of Jesus.

In 1771, Paul of the Cross founds the first monastery of Moniales passionists (of contemplative).

In 1995, the monks passionists were approximately 2.500, distributed in 57 countries.
