Congregation of Saint-Maur

The Congrégation of Saint-Maur was set up in 1621 by the pope Gregoire XV. It gathered bénédictines abbeys of France concerned to be reformed with the image of the Lorraine Congregation of Saint-Valve and Saint-Hydulphe. The monks of these establishments were called Mauristes .

It was removed in 1790 by the constituent Assembly.

History

The congregation counted among its members Dom Mabillon, Dom Brial, Dom Liron, Dom Morice, Holy-Marthe, Maur Dantine, Luc d' Achery, Ambroise Janvier, Dom Wartel, Dom Deschamps and a crowd of other hard and modest scientists.
