Conference of West (LNH)

The Conférence of the West is one of the two conferences of the National league of hockey (LNH) being used to divide the teams into sections. It is the counterpart of the Conférence of the East.

Previously known under the name of Conférence Clarence Campbell , it barrel creates in 1974 at the time the LNH realigned its teams inside two conferences and of four divisions. The conferences and divisions were realigned in 1981 in order to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the names existing were temporarily maintained with the Conference Clarence Campbell because this one represented the conference for the teams of the West of the North America. The names of the conferences and divisions were changed into 1993 in order to better reflect their geographical location. Thereafter, the new police chief of the LNH Gary Bettman carried out other changes in order to help the amateurs of the other professional sports to better including/understanding the play of the LNH, since the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, and the Major League Baseball used already all of the names of divisions and geographical conferences to designate and classify their teams. However, this movement of change started by Bettman put in anger certain purists and in favor of hockey older, which foresaw this change like an absolute disavowal of the history of the league. Criticisms also raised that the fans of baseball and football were not more confused after divisions were re-elected according to the famous names of players such as Roberto Clemente or Walter Payton. The trophy given to the annual champion of the Conference, the Trophy Clarence S. Campbell, symbolizes still today this connection with the rich and deep heritage of the league.

Divisions

Preceding réalignment by 1993, the Conference Clarence Campbell was composed of the Division Norris and the Division Smythe. Currently, the Conference of the East includes/understands 15 teams divided into three divisions: Central, North-western, and Peaceful.
