Confer , often shortened “ conf. ” even “ c.f. ” or “ cf ” in the texts (these abbreviations normally not being written in Italic), is a expression Latin E used by a writer to invite his reader to consult another passage or another work.
It comes from the Verbe confero meaning “to bring closer”, “to join”, “to join together”, of which it is the form with the imperative present. It can thus be translated into French by “referring to” or “seeing”, or in a nearby direction by “comparing with”.
Thus “c.f. reference X” is included/understood it “See reference X” or “To compare with reference X”.
