Confederation of Bar

The confederation of Bar is an insurrection of the Polish patriotic gentlemen against the interference of the Russia in 1768.

An army directed by Joseph Pulaski and Michel Krasinski meets with Bar, 70 km of the Othoman border , to defend “the faith and freedoms”. The spokesperson of confederated is the Carmelite friar P. Marek Jandolowicz, semi-prophet, semi-miracle-worker. The movement is spread quickly in Ukraine. Frederic II of Prussia calls upon safety reasons to establish garrisons in Polish Prussia. The Russians act in the same way in the south-west of the country. The Russian general Souvorov takes Cracow by storm. The king Stanislas Poniatowski combat confederated Bar or is combined with them, according to the circumstances. A Civil war follows, accompanied by an agrarian revolt; the orthodoxe peasants massacre the noble ones and the Juifs. Repression by the Russians is terrible. Pretexting a violation of the border in the continuation of revolted, the Porte declares the war in Russia in October 1768. A confused fight lasts four years. The France intervenes with dimensions of confederated and sends the colonel Dumouriez to them.

In October 1771, confederated Bar proclaim the forfeiture of the king Stanislas Poniatowski. Overcome, they deposit the weapons in August 1772 and will not be able to avoid the first division of Poland.
