Concordia university

The Université Concordia is large a urban Université located at Montreal (Quebec) with the Canada.

Presentation

The university has two Campus, separated from some 7 kilometers: the Sir-George-Williams campus in the downtown area of Montreal (station of subway Guy-Concordia), and the Loyola campus in the residential district of Our-Lady-of-Grace (station of subway Vendôme).

It is one of the two universities of Montreal offering an instruction in English language, with the Université McGill. It is officially bilingual: in agreement with the Québécois laws as regards education, the pupils enjoy the right to give their work or to make their English or French examinations.

With the autumn 2004, the university counted 30.931 students.

History

The current university is the fruit of a fusion of the Loyola College, founded by the Jesuits, and of the Sir-George-Williams University, founded by YMCA. The latter was founded to offer to the hard-working anglophone community the chance to continue an education the evening. The Loyola College served especially the anglophone catholic elite of Montreal. The two schools amalgamated in 1974. The new university drew its name from the currency of Montreal, Concordia salus (prosperity by the harmony).

Fusion was primarily forced by the government of Quebec and the two institutions, resulting from different goods mediums, took a certain time to tame down, in spite of the currency of the new institution. The first vice-chancellor of the new university, Dr. John O' Brien, a professor of economic scenes, came from Sir-George-Williams.

Programs

Concordia offers more than 180 programs of first cycle left again among four faculties: Arts and sciences, Genius and data processing, Art schools, and the School of John-Molson management.

The School of the higher learning offers more than 70 programs leading to the Maîtrise and the Doctorat.

The campus of the district of City-Marie names Sir George Williams. On the Boulevard of Maisonneuve, them (principal) buildings are:

Sports

The sporting teams of the Concordia University are called Stingers.

Famous graduates

Among the famous graduates of Concordia or his schools founders are the writer Mordecai Richler and the politician Mario Dumont, founder of the democratic Action of Quebec. The singer and stimulating Pierre Lalonde (Layola college).
