The Poupe is one of the 88 Constellation S, visible mainly of the Southern hemisphere. Included originally by Ptolémée in the immense constellation of the Ship Argo, it was created by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille when he divided the ship into distinct constellations. The Poop is largest of these constellations.
History and mythology

The Navire Argo represented, in the Greek Mythologie, the ship with which Jason left to research the Golden Fleece. Ptolémée had indexed it in its Almageste . Because of its size (1 884 square degrees) and of its extent (70° of is in west), Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille divided it into three constellations in 1752 in order to be able to handle it more easily. The constellation of the Poop is one of the resulting parts.

Observation of the sky
; Localization of the constellation To find the Poop, imagine a line between Sirius (α Canis Majoris) and Canopus (α Carinae). The Poop is 10° with 20° in the east of this line.

The designation S with the Greek letters having been assigned with the star S more than one century before division of the Ship Argo, each of the four constellations resulting from the partition inherited some as of its letters. Consequently, it misses several of the letters in each.
Naos (ζ Puppis)
ζ Puppis is called Naos, which means in Greek “ship” and defines its membership in the constellation of the Poop. Naos is the most brilliant star of the constellation (α, β and ε fell to the Carène, γ and δ with the Voiles) with a Magnitude connect of 2,21.In spite of its modest appearance, it appears among the most brilliant star S and heats of the Milky Way. It is about 20.000 times more brilliant than the Sun and its temperature of surface reaches 42.000 K (it thus emits in majority in the Ultraviolet, its luminosity total is 1 million times that of the Sun). Located at 1.400 light-years of the Ground, it would be as brilliant as full the the Moon if it were only as close as Alpha to the Centaur.
Naos is a blue Supergéante. It is estimated that it is 18 times more massive than the Sun and 40 times larger than this one. It rotates very quickly, at the speed of 200 m/s to the equator, and loses each year part of its mass, producing a stellar wind 10 million times more important than the solar wind.
Other stars
π Pup, the second star of the constellation, is a star doubles made up of an orange supergéante and a white star very distant one from the other. They belong to a star cluster which can be perceived with the naked eye like a not very luminous task around π Pup.L1 and L2 Pup form a double separable optics with the naked eye. They are distant several hundreds of years light one of the other and their apparent proximity is only one visual effect.
Another star bears a proper name: Azmidiske (ξ Pup).
Celestial objects
The Poop is on the Milky Way and contains several cluster and Nébuleuse S, the majority visible by small optical instruments, of which the open Amas S M46 and M47, 10° in the east and a little in the north of Sirius, M93, NGC 2451, NGC 2467 and NGC 2477 and the planetary nebulas NGC 2438 and NGC 2440.The Nébuleuse of Gum extends partly on the Poop (the greatest part being in the Voiles). It is the residue of a Supernova, partly lit by Naos.
