The concerto for piano in major E flat COp 73 is the last of the five Concerto S for Piano of Ludwig van Beethoven. Its composition starts about 1808-1809 and is about contemporary of that of its fifth and its sixth symphony. It was created by the Orchestre of Gewandhaus of Leipzig in 1811, the soloist being Friedrich Schneider, the deafness of the type-setter being too advanced. The first Viennese is given in 1812 with Carl Czerny to the piano.

It is dedicated to the Rodolphe archduke of Austria, its pupil, dedicatee also of sound fourth concerto. It requires an orchestra comprising, in addition to the cords, two Flûte S, two Hautbois, two Clarinette S, two Basson S, two horn S, two trumpet S and of the drinking cups.

The title “Empereur concerto” was not chosen by the musician but probably by one of his/her friends. Besides Beethoven had hardly sympathy to Napoleon Bonaparte at that time.

It includes/understands three movements whose execution lasts a little more than one half an hour:

  1. Allegro
  2. Adagio a poco motor bike - attacca:
  3. Rondo. Allegro

This concerto more still than all the others had the appearance of a symphony with orchestral piano.

The first movement begin with an improvisation from the piano. It makes think of work set of themes future of Schumann, Liszt or Berlioz, Beethoven writing as a symphonist. In the second movement, the piano is melted completely with the mass orchestral. The sequence with the final rondo is done by a tonal change and the advertisement with semi-voice of the topic of the refrain. This rondo gives up its character of entertainment definitively and approaches the sonata form.
