Concepción of Vega

Concepción of Vega is the chief town of Vega (province), in Dominican Republic. Located in the valley of Vega Real , the city is bathed by the Rio Camú .

Set up in 1494, this city is one of oldest American continent, just like the diocese of the same name insituté by the pope Julien III. The beginning of the construction of the cathedral of the Inmaculada Concepcion of Vega , ordered by the archbishop of Seville, goes back to 1512.

It is here that in 1495, one delivered the battles of the valley of Vega Real , which had a considerable impact on the history of the island. The stake of this conflict was the release of the valley by the Spanish army sent by Christophe Colomb. According to the legend, the night preceding the battle, the Vierge of Mow Mercedes appeared to the Spaniards, in their camping, guaranteeing the victory to them. Since then, the Vierge from Mercedes is regarded as the owner of the Dominican Republic.

In 1997, Vega Vieja (or old city of Vega ) was declared historical National park , just like the Santo Cerro . One finds there in particular the fortress of Concepción , a convent of Franciscains and two cemeteries.
