Concepción (Chile)

History

Concepción is founded by Pedro de Valdivia on October 5th, 1550 in bay of Concepción . Two years later, she is recognized like city by Royal Décret. During XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries, it has a Audiencia (the most important court of the colonial Spain).

May 25th, 1751, a Earthquake and a Tsunami destroy the city, and one decided to rebuild the city in the valley of Molcha. On the place of Weapons (the central place of the city), one signed the declaration of independence on January 1st, 1818. The place then took the name of Place of Independence. During second half of the XXe century, she knew a strong growth passing of approximately 50.000 inhabitants in 1944 to more than one million in 2005.

Demography

Concepción is the second Conurbation country with exactly 912.986 inhabitants according to the census of 2002. It is also the Agglomération of a million inhabitants most southern of the world.

Geography and climate

The city is located on a typical wooded site of the areas of the southern center of the Chile. Its climate is of oceanic type with a strong Mediterranean influence; during the summer months (December at March), precipitations represent only one quarter of those of the year. Economy and education
