Concarneau
Concarneau (whose name Breton is Konk Kerne: The bay of Cornwall ), is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France.
Concarneau is located in the south of the department of the Finistere, in an area called the Cornwall (Country of Brittany of the Ancien Mode).
The town of Concarneau is centered around its City-closed and of its port, for a long time its fishing port was the main activity of the city. Today, the city always lives around its ramparts, but the Tourisme and the Naval construction became important activities in the city.
Origin of the name
The origin of the name Concarneau is not very clear, indeed it exists various versions. One can quote several of them:
- konk , handle, bay
- concq by conch , large shell according to Gregoire de Rostrenen;
- concq by corner, point according to Furrier;
- quince by rebated joint, angulus according to the Catholicon (old Breton dictionary ).
The translation of Kerne seems rather unanimous, sigifiant Cornwall . Thus, according to the translations Concarneau means " Shelter of Cornouaille". The term shelter wants to say that concarneau is sheltered by the grounds which are around.
With the wire of the times the name changes and one finds different names according to the documents. Thus, according to the times one finds:
- Conc in 1279;
- Chonc about 1330;
- Conq in 1407;
- Concarneau in 1489.
In the same way for Lanriec which will be attached in 1959:
- Lan Rioc at the 11th century;
- Lanriec about 1330;
- Lanreuc in 1368, 1405;
- Lanriec in 1535.
