Conan II of Brittany , born with Rennes in 1030, duke of 1040 to its death in 1066, wire of the duke Alain III and Berthe of Chartres, must first of all be released from the cumbersome supervision of his/her uncle Éon (or Eudes) Ier de Penthièvre. Eudes belongs to the adversaries of Guillaume Bastard the, future duke of Normandy. It will be necessary for Conan to await the victory of Guillaume over his opponents, with the Valley-be-Dunes in October 1047, so that his/her uncle gives up the ducal capacity to him.
Conan even succeeds, with dead of the count Mathias, without heir, to extend his capacity on the county of Nantes. Nevertheless, this county is also asserted by Alain Canhiart, count de Cornouaille, in the name of his Judith wife. This county falls ultimately to their son Hoël V of Cornwall, which will become the brother-in-law of Conan, by marrying his/her sister Havoise.
It must also face the revolt of Riwallon Ier de Dol, supported by Guillaume the Bastard one.
Towards the end of the year 1066, the Breton prince, after having conquered Pouancé and Segré, came until Castle-Gontier of which it forced the entry, but it died in its triumph, poisoned, says one, by a traitor on the order of Guillaume Bastard the, suspected of having financed this assassination. The cause of the war was probably the desire to restore the limits of the Brittany, carried by Erispoë until the Mayenne, and that the Breton prince had strengthened by very strong cuttings off, including/understanding two ditches and two hedges of ground, supported of distance in distance by boulevards, and energy of Mayenne above Bazouges, with the Seiche opposite the Availles.
Conan II is buried in abbey the Abbaye Saint-Melaine of Rennes where its tomb was found under the tower at the time of restoration.
In the absence of direct heirs, his Hoël brother-in-law succeeds to him: the house of Rennes must leave the place to the house of Cornwall to the head of the duchy of Brittany.
