Conan III of Brittany , known as the Large , (1095 - September 17th 1148), duke of Brittany, is the son of Alain IV Fergent and Ermengarde of Anjou.
It succeeds his father who abdicates in his favor in 1112, after having gradually initiated it with the businesses of the duchy. It can count in addition on the assistance of his mother, respected empowered woman who had ensured the continuity of the ducal capacity when Alain IV had left in Croisade. Ensured of an alliance with the king capétien Louis VI which guarantees it against conflicts coming from the east, he fights against the feudal and makes make great progress with peace in Brittany.
Though married to Mathilde, an illegitimate girl of Henri I {{er}} Beauclerc, it links her armies with those of Louis the Large one against her father-in-law, the king d' Angleterre. After the death of this last, the fights for the capacity which proceed in England and Normandy ensure him a certain peace.
In its setting with the step of its vassal, it is brought to enact some new laws for the duchy, like that removing the “right of breaking” or that limiting the seigneuriaux rights on the heritages… These reforms were made possible in particular thanks to the support without fault of the Church.
In 1148, on its bed of death, he repudiates Hoël, with the reason that this last would be a Bâtard. He recognizes then his grandson Conan IV for heir under the supervision to Éon de Porhoët, the second husband of his Berthe daughter. The refusal of Hoël to accept this setting with the variation causes a successional serious attack.
From its marriage with Mathilde are born three descendants:
- Constancy
- Berthe, born towards 1114, widowed wife then of Alain the Black, first Count de Richmond, and which will marry Éon de Porhoët in second weddings in 1148.
- Hoël .
