Conall Cóel

Conall Cóel mac Máel Coba mac Áedo laughed Ard Érenn unites 642 with 654.

Conall Cóel is the son of the laughed Ard Érenn Máel Coba mac Áedo and one of the two nephews and successor of Domnall mac Áedo.

Conall Cóel had played a big role as chief of Cenél Conaill during the reign of his/her uncle. It seems that he succeeded this last jointly with his brother Cellach in 643.

The rupture of alternation between the Ui of North and the South in favor it Cenél Conaill appears to have met a strong opposition emanating of Síl nÁedo Sláine.

The Annales of Ulster indicate the same year indeed:

" It is dubious of knowing which reigned after Domnall.Quelques historiographers evoke 4 kings: Cellach and Mael Coel mac Máel Coba mac Áedo and two wire of Áed Sláine mac Diarmaid mac Fergus Cerbaill mac Conall Cremthain mac Niall Noigiallach i.e Diarmaid and Blathmac"

The two brothers are also mentioned like the winner of the Battle of Dun Cremthain during which Aengus mac Domnall undoubtedly their first cousin would have found death in 650.

The murder of Conall Cóel, assassinated by Diarmaid mac Aed Sláine is finally the object an entry in 654 in Annals.

Another reign unites that of brothers Diarmait Ruanaid and Blathmac mac Áed Sláine makes following that of Cellach and Conall Cóel.
