The battery of Morsalines

The battery of Morsalines, arranged since 1941, is oldest of the Eastern coast of Cotentin. It is composed of six French parts of 155mm dating from the First World War, installed with the free air on concreted surfaces. Because of their range, they could reach the sector of Varreville, where the Americans had chosen to unload.

Enough astutely camouflaged, it escaped a long time for submission to the Allies, but ends up undergoing in May 1944 a bombardment devastator which destroyed or damaged half of its guns. It was then moved in withdrawal.

Because of this new position and owing to the fact that the Americans, by error, took foot on June 6th on a beach located two kilometers at the south of the place envisaged, the battery of Morsalines could of nothing block the operations of unloading. Become useless on the spot, its guns were transported inside the fortress of Cherbourg.
