Computer center of in2P3

The Center Computer of in2P3 (CC-IN2P3) is a Unit of Service and Research (USR 6402) of IN2P3, itself an research institute fundamental of CNRS.

Its role is to provide average data processing (development, calculations, storage) to the experiments of the physics of the particles (mainly), as well as varied services (network, DNS, support…).

Geographical location

The CC-IN2P3 is installed since 1986 on the scientific discipline of Doua, with Villeurbanne (Lyon).

Roles

The character indeterminist of subatomic physics requires the billion statistical analysis interactions between particles in order to study the fundamental processes. From a data-processing point of view, this analysis supposes transport, the storage and the treatment of enormous quantities of data.

Vis-a-vis these problems, the CC-IN2P3 developed an expertise in several fields, in particular the design, the installation and the exploitation of the firm of computers for the data processing (simulation, examination, statistical analysis, visualization), the design and the implementation of an architecture for the massive storage of data (databases, network of storage, discs made safe, automated tape library, access high efficiencies) and the installation of the transport infrastructure of the data (local networks and extended to very wideband).

The CC-IN2P3 is a major actor of the scientific computation for the exploitation of the data of the collider LHC of CERN. Within the framework of organization W-LCG (Worldwide LHC Computing Grid), it is one of the 11 world computer centres of first level of data processing of the LHC.

The CC-IN2P3 developed an expertise in technologies of data-processing grid (grid computing) and became today a major actor of the device in France, in particular through the multidisciplinary project of grid European EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science).

The CC-IN2P3 recently opened its doors with the biologists, to which the needs are close to those of subatomic physics in particular in the field of the storage and the division of the data.

Associated services for work in collaboration are also proposed with the CC-IN2P3, such as the lodging of Internet sites, the distribution of email, the services of directories, videoconference, distribution of the scientific data, etc

Thanks to its expertise and its technological know-how, the CC-IN2P3 thus meets the data-processing needs of more than 2500 people and takes part in about fifty experiments of scale in the fields of the physics of the particles, of the physical of the astroparticules, hadron physics and the nuclear matter.

The CC-IN2P3 in figures

At the beginning of 2006, the CC-IN2P3 places at the disposal as of its utilisateurs :
  • Approximately 1500 processors representing a computing power of 1.5 million SpecINT 2000 or 3.5 TFlops, accessible through farms from calculation. The last acquired machines are bi-processors Intel in four hearts equipped with 16Go of memory, and the precedents of the bi-processors Opteron with dual-core equipped with 8 G Octet S of memory vive  ;
  • Approximately 300 TOctets of discs high efficiencies been used by a hundred as waiters. These discs are inter-connected via a network of storage Fiber Channel  ;
  • Six storage bins of mass STK of a full capacity of 36.000 cassettes magnétiques  ;
  • a lan Ethernet to 10 Gbit/s  ;
  • a connection towards the network of education and research French RENATER and by its intermediary towards the European network GEANT  ;
  • a connection dedicated to 10 Gbit/s towards CERN.

From here 2008, the capacity of calculation and storage of the CC-IN2P3 will be multiplied by ten.
