History
Several sites of the terroire testify to a presence Chalcolithique and age to Iron. Formerly important market and crossing point, the old borough of Comps was built on the height and its Saint-Andrew church dominated it the top of its rock. The Templiers of the house of Ruou (see Villecroze) there had an important commandery which became after the abolition of the Order in 1312, chief town of a commandery of Malta, enjoying very important incomes.
At the beginning of XVIe century, the knights of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem became only lords of Comps by acquiring the share of seigniory which had been pledged in August 1381 in favor of Fulco de Pontevès, and which depended previously on the Comté of Provence.
During the wars of succession of the queen Jeanne, the village and ramparts had been destroyed by Charles of Lasted; the inhabitants were established then in the countryside where they built nine hamlets: Oribau, Saint-Bayon, Chardan, Gift, Doureisse, Guent, Jabron, Sauvechane and the Stock. Returned peace, the village was rebuilt in amphitheater on leaning rock which it occupies today.
