Compiz

Compiz is a Free software as well as a Gestionnaire of windows allowing advanced graphic effects like the transparency, the 3D and the shades. It uses the graphic waiters Xgl or AIGLX, waiters X in 3D, which is based on a library OpenGL like on acceleration 3D of the Graphics card of the system.

Compiz is a project having for goal to allow the composition of posting, i.e. the use of the graphics card instead of the main frame to deal with whole or part of posting. The Beryl project is a Fork of Compiz, of which it separated because of dissensions on the priorities of the development. But the two projects then again amalgamated to form Compiz Fusion.

Description

Compiz provides visual effects making it possible to improve user-friendliness of the graphic environments. It combines a manager of windows and a type-setter of images resting on OpenGL for returned.

The administrative of windows allows the handling of all the applications and objects which are posted with the screen. The type-setter of images allows the windows and other graphs to be combined in order to form a made up image . That consists in assembling the various layers of images in a single image to be able to be posted with the screen.

Compiz currently functions in combination with Xgl or AIGLX respectively initiated by Novell and the project Fedora.

Plugins make it possible to use indifferently GNOME, KDE or Xfce and to benefit from these graphic effects.

Currently, the managers of windows and the type-setters of images function for the majority without material Accélération, which represents a loss on the level of the distribution of calculations: the main frame of the computer deals with graphic tasks whereas the Graphics card which has a Processeur dedicated and optimized for graphics remains little used.

Compiz makes it possible in combination with Xgl to benefit from the graphics card, thus discharging the main frame. For example, Microsoft Windows, to the version XP, manages the windows via the main frame. If you move a window when the load of the system is important, of the trails of windows appear on the screen.

Today, while resting mainly on the graphics card, Compiz makes it possible to move of the windows without never having trails nor deceleration even during the use of a machine of low power. Let us note that Mac OS X allows it since 2002 with Jaguar, thanks to its system Extreme Quartz.

September 19th, 2006, the community of voluntary developers formed around Quinn Storm, a very active contributor of Compiz, decides, afterwards months of discussions (and many refusal on behalf of the principal maintenor of Compiz to integrate the majority of its contributions) of launching the fork of Compiz  officially;: Beryl. The 2 projects were reunified in only one. The fusion of the two projects is called Compiz Fusion.
