Competition of Golf

Formulas of play

One of the pleasures of the Golf is the richness of the modes of play. A competition of golf can be a Tournoi between the best players of the world but also a competition of the club itself. One can play in various ways a competition.
  • Various formulas

    • the Stroke-play: it is the “basic” formula of the golf. It is necessary to make less blows possible on a course. In general, it is a course of 18 holes. It is the mode “play by blows” (or “play by medals”). It is described with rule 3 of the Règles of Golf. There is an alternative which is called the Stableford.
    • the Match-play is a formula where two players (or teams) clash. It is described with rule 2 of the Règles of Golf. There exist two alternatives of the match-play: “Against by” and “against bogey”.
  • How can one play the part?

    • Individual: only one player.
    • Four-balls: the two players of the camp play each one a ball and the best score carried out on each hole is taken into account. In a competition with a handicap, the best ball in Net is taken into account.
    • Foursome : a team of two players. A player begins the even holes and the other the odd ones. Then is with the other player to play the second blow, then that which began the hole plays the third blow and so on.
    • Greensome: the difference of Foursome, in Greensome, both play each departure and one chooses the best blow. From there, the player whose ball was not selected cheek the second blow and the first plays the third blow.
    • Scramble: a team of two, three, four players. Each player plays the departure. The best ball is chosen. From there, all the players rejouent, one again chooses the best ball and so on.
    • Chapman: the two players of the camp play each one a ball of the departure, alternate for the second blow and choose then that which is appropriate to them best to finish the hole while playing alternatively.
    • Patsome: the first six holes are played in four balls, the six following in Greensome, the last six in Foursome. The calculation of the blows is done as in Foursome.
    • Race with the flag: each player has a personalized flag, which will be planted at the place where its ball will be when it exhausts all his blows. The total of the blows is calculated for each player by adding his handicap to Scratch Score Standard (example: player Hcp 24, S.S.S. 71 => the player has a credit of 95 blows). The player who planted his flag further will be declared victorious.
    • Race with the string: each competitor receives a string of which the length is function of the handicap of the player (in general, 50 cm per point of handicap, but the Committee of test can fix itself this length). That makes it possible the competitor to prolong the race of its ball until in the hole, or to leave it a perilous position when it is not easily playable. The player then cuts the end of the string thus used and continuous with the length of remaining string.
    • Eclectic: is played on 2 or several charts. The final chart is established by retaining the best score for each hole among all the played charts.
    • Ringer Score: it is a formula very close to Eclectic, but of which the bases are either a significant number of charts or a number of charts carried out during a certain calendar time. Ringer Score is often played in winter on 9 or 10 charts, to support the training of the players during this season. With the wire of the parts, each player retains the best score obtained on each hole. The best possible chart is constituted gradually until the term of the test.

Thus a competition is a mixture of the two categories: Individual-Stroke Play, Play Foursome-Match,…

Scores

For the calculation, one can choose between the crude and the Net. For the crude, the handicap does not count while in Net, the player receives blows according to his handicap.

Handicap and Playing handicap

Here how to calculate the number of received blows:

The handicap is the number which defines the level of the player. It indicates the blows in addition to by the player is authorized to make to remain in the points. It lies between 0 and 53,4. Some good players can have a negative handicap. The not classified golfeurs have an index of 53,5 (In Switzerland the maximum handicap is of 36).

In Europe, the categories of handicap are:

  • 1 up to 4,4
  • 2 from 4,5 to 11,4
  • 3 of 11,5 to 18,4
  • 4 of 18,4 to 26,4
  • 5 from 26,5 to 53,5

Starting from this index and characteristics of the course, one calculates the playing handicap of play corresponding to the played course.

The courses are calibrated to measure their difficulty. To each starting mark (for the men as for the ladies) correspond two values:

  • By is to It the sum of By each hole. By hole varies especially according to its length.
  • the Race measurement the difficulty of the course since these starting marks for a player of handicap 0. It is the score of reference of a player of handicap 0: if it makes less than the Course , it plays better than its level, if it makes more, it plays less although its level.
  • the slope measurement the differential of difficulty for a player of handicap higher than 0 compared to player of handicap 0. The slope of reference is 113.

The handicap of play (or the number of received blows) of the player for a competition on a given course is calculated as follows:

Playing = handicap * \ frac {slope} {113} + Race - Par

Example: a player whose index is 18,4 plays on yellow marks on a course of which by is it of 71, the Race of 69,5, the slope of 115.

Playing = 18,4 * \ frac {115} {113} + 69,5 - 71 = 17,22566. One rounds to 17.

Results

Independently of the type of the competition, the score to vary or not the handicap is calculated in points Stableford. It is necessary to make 36 points to play its handicap (2 points per hole * 18 holes).

If the player plays better or less better in competition, its handicap can evolve/move:

  • of one or two tenth moreover, if he plays less better,
  • of one or more tenth in less if he plays better.

Case with the fall:

  • Category 1: 0,1 per point above 36
  • Category 2: 0,2 per point above 36
  • Category 3: 0,3 per point above 36
  • Category 4: 0,4 per point above 36
  • Category 5: 0,5 per point above 36

There exists from now on a margin of error called buffer zone : it allows the player who does not have completely carried out 36 points stableford not to go up his index.

  • Category 1: tolerance of 1 point (35 points)
  • Category 2: tolerance of 2 points (34 points)
  • Category 3: tolerance of 3 points (33 points)
  • Category 4: tolerance of 4 points (32 points)
  • Category 5: tolerance of 5 points (31 points)

Case with the rise:

In on this side these limits, a against-performance (also important it is) will cost 0,1 point for the first 4 categories and 0,2 point for category 5.
