Geography

The city is, in France, at the border Suisse very near to the agglomeration of Geneva, on the north-western edge of the International airport of Geneva (Cointrin). It is located on D 1005 which connects Geneva (and with beyond French bank of the Lac Léman) to Dijon while passing by the Col of the Sickle.

History

Ferney (initially " Fernex") the name of Ferney-Voltaire starting from 1878 in homage to Voltaire took which remained there starting from 1759 for its proximity of the border, in the event of problem with the royal administration, and of Geneva, town of his rival, Rousseau. On its arrival, the hamlet counted hardly a hundred hearts. Voltaire made cleanse the marshy zones, build many houses, inviting craftsmen - clock and watch makers, tisserands - to be established to with it, a castle and a vault. It is not exaggerated to write that Ferney would have remained a small village without the activity of the “Patriarch” who inserted it in the history. With its death in 1778, Ferney counted nearly 1.000 habitants.

The canton, which belongs to the district of Gex or Pays of Gex, has 8 communes and 28  427 inhabitants.

Economy

The city benefits from its great proximity with the town of Geneva. A third of the population approximately is composed civils servant of the international organizations installed in Geneva (UNO, WHO, the ILO, OMC etc), a second third constitutes the frontier ones, living in France and working in Geneva or in the canton of Vaud. This population with strong purchasing power knows a very important renewal rate, which supports the maintenance of the rents on levels much higher than the value of the real goods to the sale. The last third of the population which works in France tests in all logic of the difficulties of housing and undergoes a cost of living high. That often forces this category of population to be placed further in the Country of Gex.

The city also attracts the Swiss populations on her market of Saturday and its supermarkets. The international College is an establishment with the original architecture which provides education for the pupils of the district, but comprises also classes known as “international” managed in a private way or by their government of supervision, where the pupils can receive courses in their native tongue (English, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Swedish) and prepare the Vat with International Option. It was created in the Années 1970 to answer the increasing demand because of establishment of CERN.

The city has an antenna of the Chamber of commerce and industry of the Jura.

Tourist monuments and places

  • the castle of Voltaire, acquired by the French Republic in 1998: When Voltaire becomes purchaser of the field of Ferney, it entirely rebuilds it while directing itself work as of 1758. The castle is finished in 1762 and presents, side court, a traditional frontage organized symmetrically around a framed entry of doric columns, surmounted double pilasters on the floor, and of a pediment carrying the weapons of the lord. The frontage, side garden, were animated of a fore-part in round-off, embedded ionic and crowned pilasters of a curvilinear pediment. It was replaced at the 19th century by a frontage punt with triangular pediment. The park is arranged simultaneously and takes part in the setting in scene of the castle which dominates the site, in particular by the establishment, in the south, of hedges and towards the west of one garden to the Frenchwoman, of a water part and a broad terrace. Voltaire makes below arrange openings in the foliation of the trees the terrace to release the sight towards the Alps. The close barn was arranged as a theater.
