Company of transport of Tunis

The Company of transport of Tunis (STT), whose trade description is Transtu , is a State enterprise in charge of the management of the transport of the passengers on the networks of bus and light subway of the agglomeration of Tunis (Tunisia) as well as the exploitation with the railway line TGM.

Born in 2003 from the fusion between the National company of transport (SNT) and the Company of the light subway of Tunis (SMLT), it transports each year 460 million passengers.

History

  • 1871 : construction project of the first railway line of the country, Tunis Goulette, concretized in 1872
  • 1885: putting into circulation of the first Tram tunisois, horse-drawn then electric, in 1902
  • 1903: first railway line of suburbs between Tunis (Bab Saadoun) and Manouba
  • 1930: first lines of bus connecting Tunis (Street of Rome and Place of the Station), Mutuelleville and Montfleury
  • 1944: replacement of the trams by Trolley bus
  • 1958: nationalization of transport
  • 1963: foundation of the National company of transport (SNT), in charge of the public road transport, which specializes in 1964 in the transport of passengers of the agglomeration of Tunis
  • 1985: startup of the first underground line light between Tunis and Ben Arous
  • 2003: fusion of the SNT and the Company of the light subway of Tunis

Networks

The company exploits 3 networks:
  • a network of bus a 5836 kilometers length in Tunis and its suburbs, thus serving a population of approximately 2 million inhabitants. After the development of the light subway, the network bus was tightened around 206 lines regular and exploited thanks to 1050 buses. They are locatable by their color Jaune and a number made up of a number in general overcome of a small letter (in red). The termini are registered on a plate in red letters (in Arabic and French).

  • a network of light subway made up of 5 principal lines an overall length of 82 kilometers. One 6th line is under development between Tunis and Manouba while passing by the campus of the Université of Manouba. 136 oars are currently in exploitation. A new material is in the course of acquisition to renew a park going back to a score of years.
  • the railway line TGM which comprise 18 oars circulating between Tunis and Marsa. It is also in the process of modernization.

It should be noted that public transport in the agglomeration is shared with conveyers deprived since the end of the Années 1980, while the railway network of suburbs is exploited by the National company of the Tunisian railroads (SNCFT).
