Company of the men of letters

The Société of the men of letters of France (SGDLF) was founded in 1838 by famous writer S, Honore de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, George Sand. It is a private association recognized like establishment of public utility per decree on December 10th 1891.

It is, in France, the only association of authors managed by authors, whose vocation are to defend the Moral right, the interests patrimonial and legal status and social of all the authors of the writing. She exerts an action of vigilance, reflection and new advantage and private bill for the benefit of the community of the authors. She is directed by a voluntary Committee of twenty-four writers and is currently chaired by the novelist François Taillandier.

To belong to the Company, it is necessary to be an author and, more precisely, to be published (the editions on account of author are not taken into account). The SGDL proposes with its members offices of social security, legal aid and a service of deposit of works in order to guarantee anteriority in the event of litigations of it. It organizes each year various cultural events and the attribution of a certain number of prices to works published on account of editor, for an amount of 75.000 Euros.

The SGDL occupies the very beautiful Hôtel of Massed, construction of the 18th traditional century of style which had the strange destiny to be moved stone by stone in 1928, of its site of origin, on the Fields-Élysées, with its current site, at the end of the Garden of the Observatoire of Paris, Rue of the Suburb-Saint-Jacques.
