Company of the letters, sciences and arts of Aveyron

After the French revolution of 1789, many intellectual groupings are born, encouraged by the minister Guizot. The cultural life aveyronnaise then is strongly influenced by some personalities and big families of notable: Monseignat, Séguret, Rodat, Bonald, Barrau, Cabrières, etc

Creation

In 1836, is thus created with Rodez on the initiative of the general adviser Hippolyte de Barrau, the Société of the Letters, Sciences and Arts of the Aveyron . The principal founders are Sirs: Jules Catch, Banking; Louis Bouloumié, lawyer; Etienne-Joseph Boissonnade, Architect of the department; Eugene Teissier, naval officer; Villa, lawyer; Adolphe Boisse, Engineer; Jules Duval, lawyer and Publicity agent; and the brothers of Barrau, Hippolyte, member of the general advice, and Adolphe, Naturalist.

Sirs Henri Carcenac, banker; Theodore de Cabrières; Joseph-Dominique Bouloumié, mayor of Rodez; and Gustave Cassanac, engineer, also imply themselves in this project.

Objectives

As its name indicates it this Company is given for objectives to make thrive in Rouergue the progress of the letters, sciences, arts and industry.

  • Hippolyte of MONSEIGNAT (1805 - 1893), president of 1863 with 1868.
  • Adolphe BOISSE (1810 - 1896), president of 1868 with 1892.
  • Christmas MAISONABE (1842 - 1928), president of 1892 with 1919.
  • BROWNISH Henri (1853 -1928), president of 1919 with 1926.
  • Henri BOUSQUET (1865 - 1953), president of 1926 with 1953.
  • Bernard COMBES of PATRIS (1884 - 1965), president of 1953 to 1965.
  • Pierre CARRERE (1898 - 1984), president of 1965 to 1984.
  • Robert TAUSSAT, president of 1984 with 2004.
  • Roger BÉTEILLE, president since 2004.

Today

At the origin very élitiste (and relayed by eminent corresponding members: Châteaubriand, Mérimée, the Prince de Monaco, etc), the Company of the Letters, Sciences and Arts of Aveyron since was democratized. At this beginning of XXIe century, it gathers approximately 500 members. She works in collaboration with other learned societies, universities (Paris I Sorbonne, Toulouse it Mirail, etc), CNRS, the École of the Charters, the National library of France, etc

She organizes conferences and cultural events in Aveyron, she publishes works on Rouergue and an annual collection of her work from now on entitled Études Aveyronnaises . She has many Mémoires .

She organizes each year a cultural exit for her members. She also rewards by the Prix Cabrol , work and works which honor the culture rouergate.

Part of its many collections are exposed to the Musée Fenaille, in Rodez.

It is a cultural institution opened to the researchers, to the teachers, to the students, and with all those which are interested in the culture of this province.

She is recognized of public utility since the October 29th 1857.
