Company of the Departmental Railroads

The Compagnie of the Departmental Railroads (CFD) is a French company specialized in the railway construction of material, and in the past the construction and the exploitation of railway lines.

Beginnings of the company

The Compagnie of the Departmental Railroads was created in 1881 to build and exploit railway lines, whose majority on average mountain were built with metric gauge Track.

The first line built by the CFD was the line of Port-Ball to Castle-Renault in Indre-et-Loire. The network of the CFD counted up to 3000 km of lines.

The CFD continued to exploit its lines after the creation of the SNCF, but the majority were closed after the Second world war, like many French secondary lines nonprofitable.

The remaining lines were taken again either by the SNCF, or by the local government agencies.

The railway construction of material

In order to replace the material steam traction, and complement of purchase of Rail-car (amongst other things Billiards and Soulé), the CFD starts to develop materials of diesel traction, with majority with metric gauge Track.

The railway construction of Matériel thus became its main activity, after the closing of the majority of its lines, for lack of profitability.

In 1992, the CFD takes again the old department railway construction of the company Soulé with Bagnères-with-Bigorre, which becomes thus CFD Bagnères , subsidiary company at 100% of group CFD.

This recovery enabled him to profit from the techniques of construction of cars of and railroad Autorail.

The railway construction of material is from now on the main activity of the CFD.
